In recognition of Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month, this issue of the Research Rundown is dedicated to the incredible advances in cancer treatment through research. The Nicklaus Children's Research Institute (NCRI) with the Helen & Jacob Shaham Cancer & Blood Disorders Institute have more than 30 studies that are actively recruiting new subjects.
Currently being evaluated for safety and efficacy, many cutting-edge cancer treatments are only available through a research program like the one offered at NCRI. This means that, in the absence of a research program, children who do not respond optimally to current standard of care treatments may be without alternatives. The physicians at Nicklaus Children's Hospital can offer unique cancer treatment options through research, directly impacting patient treatment options.
Once completed, study results may then be generalized to the pediatric medical community which impacts cancer treatments globally. As a result, Nicklaus Children's physicians and patients involved in research contribute to the global advancement of pediatric cancer treatments.

The NCRI collaborates with Pharmaceutical Companies, Children's Oncology Group, Beat Childhood Cancer, the CONNECT consortium, and other groups to open important clinical trials. Studies opened in conjunction with the CONNECT consortium focus on pediatric brain tumor research. These trials are important because brain and central nervous system tumors are the most common cancer diagnosed in children, currently affecting more than 28,000 children in the US.1 Clinical trials, like those available at Nicklaus Children's, provides access to
new treatment options aimed at improving the survival rate and quality of life for children with conditions like these.
The NCRI is ecstatic about the impact that Nicklaus Children's physicians are having on children's lives through cancer research. As the pediatric cancer research program continues to grow, we anticipate significant advancements in cancer care because of the research happening every day at Nicklaus Children's Hospital.
